An imine is an organic compound characterized by a nitrogen atom doubly bound to a carbon atom. Two such imines: p-Br-Sal and p-I-Sal, have previously shown fluorescent properties and exhibit nuclear staining; the latter has additionally been shown to impact cell viability in mammalian cells.  This study examines the binding affinity and specificity of p-Br-Sal and p-I-Sal to DNA targets. Fluorescence spectroscopy was used to analyze binding to calf thymus DNA, as well as specifically synthesized nucleotide sequences that are AT-rich, GC-rich, and mixed with varying concentrations of p-Br-Sal and p-I-Sal.
