Physical mixtures of Mo/ZSM-5 and Zr result in maximum single pass conversion of ~27% for CH4 dehydroaromatization (6CH4 → C6H6 + 9H2) in significant excess of the ~10% conversion and a concurrent 1.4-5.6 fold increase in aromatic product yields owing to circumvention of thermodynamic equilibrium constraints by absorptive removal of hydrogen on Zr. We further show that a reaction-transport model accounting for absorbent proximity effects through consideration of kinetic, diffusive, and convective length scales accurately predicts benzene yield and hydrogen partial pressure for various reactor configurations.
