Single crystals of Ln2Fe4-xCoxSb5-yBiy (Ln = La, Ce; x &lt; 0.5) were grown stoichiometrically and with Bi flux. The compounds adopt the La2Fe4Sb5 structure type with tetragonal space group I4/mmm. The La2Fe4Sb5 structure type is comprised of rare earth atoms capping square Sb nets in a square antiprism fashion and two transition metal networks formed from a PbO-type layer interspaced with a second transition metal in an isosceles triangle environment. The details of the synthesis and strategy for crystal growth will be presented. The role of Co substitution on the competition between localized and itinerant magnetic interactions will also be discussed.
