Electrophilic aromatic chlorination is a vital synthetic transformation in the production of intermediates and end-targets in a diverse range of applications. Our research group and others have recently developed new methods to activate N-halo reagents to serve as halogenating species under visible-light photoredox conditions. Typically, Ir or Ru transition-metal catalysts are employed as a photocatalyst. During our investigation of the use of organic dyes as visible-light photoredox catalysts, we have observed the chlorination of arenes and heteroarenes catalyzed by organic dyes under dark conditions. Our progress towards the screening of catalysts, optimization of reaction conditions, and substrate scope expansion of arene chlorination under light-free conditions will be presented.
