Amino acids have long been designated the building blocks of life. They have proven to be extremely versatile structures that in combination derive more complicated systems. Studies into these systems, proteins and peptides, have lead to advances in medicine by allowing a more complete understanding to the underlying causes of various diseases. Therefore, it is not all that surprising that many future therapeutics may involve the application of new or non-proteinogenic a-amino acids. The emerging field of peptidomimetics is direct evidence of the influence that these compounds will have on the future of medicine. However, to expedite this process the scientific community will require access to these materials in larger quantities and derivatives. This is especially true for derivatives that include at least one chiral center. As the preparation of optically active versions of these molecules remains a challenging topic. Therefore, the investigation presented herein will focus on the development of asymmetric methods for the preparation of these unique molecules.
