The leave of Jatropha tangorensis also known as ‘hospital too far’ in Nigeria due to its healing potential is edible and have been used in herbal medicine. Jatropha tangorensis is of the family Euphorbiaceae which contains several toxic substances. The use of GC-MS and FTIR to characterize and identified the chemical components in the different fractions of the leaf is the focus of this study. The ethanol crude extract of Jatropha tangorensis was subjected to Column chromatography for elution using n-hexane, ethylacetate and methanol. The fractions obtained were further analyzed using GC-MS (Agilent GC-MS 7590A coupled with MSD 5975C) and FTIR (Buck Scientific FTIR M530) for identification and characterization of the bioactive chemical components present in the leaf. The FTIR spectra shows the presence of the following prominent functional groups O-H, C=O, and N=O; O-H, C=O and C=C; O-H, C=C, N-H and C=O in the n-hexane, ethylacetate and methanol fractions respectively. The results also revealed good number of bioactive components in different fractions. The most three (3) abundant components in the three different fractions are Neophytadiene (18.72%), Hexadecanoic acid, ethyl ester (15.12%), and 9,12,-Octadecadienoic acid, ethyl ester (13.07%); 1,3-benzodioxole, 5-(1-(4-ethoxyphenyl) ethyl)-6-methoxyl- (31.26%), D-friedolean-14-en-3-one (15.03%), and lup-20(29)-en-3-ol, acetate, (3. beta) (6.9%); olean-12-en-3-ol, acetate (3. beta) (15.5%), beta-amyrone (7.89%) and D-friedoolean-14-en-3-one (7.81%) for n-hexane, ethylacetate and methanol fractions respectively. The different bioactive components in the different fractions of Jatropha tangorensis have been identified by GC-MS and FTIR spectroscopy and could be related to the various pharmacological activities of the plant.
