Basal bark treatments are a preferred method for invasive tree removal because they minimize non-target impacts by directing herbicides to only the target species. In this study, we identified effective rates of basal bark treatments of <i>Prunus padus</i>, a highly invasive plant in Southcentral Alaska. We also documented non-target herbicide impacts in lab and field trials of individually treated trees; Non-target herbicide damage to native vegetation were documented in approximately one-fourth of herbicide-treated trees in field trials and were more frequently associated with aminopyralid treatments than triclopyr. Aminopyralid is of concern because persistent residues can damage plants for years. We are currently applying basal bark treatments to <i>P. padus</i> in plots of varying infestation density to determine if infestation density is associated with herbicide impact to non-target vegetation and concentration of herbicide residues in soil. We also are developing a lanthanide-based immunoassay for rapid detection of aminopyralid in soil and will discuss progress of hapten synthesis.
