It is known that they are relations between the optical properties of the dissolved organic matter (DOM) and its physical characteristics such as molecular weight, aromaticity, or electron-donating capacity. Such relations have also been investigated for the potential of production of reactive intermediates such as singlet oxygen (1O2) and excited triplet states of the dissolved organic matter (3DOM*) and relations between the DOM optical properties and the 1O2 quantum yield (Φ1O2) or fluorescence quantum yield (Φf) have been discovered. We present here investigation on the effects of ozonation in the presence or in the absence of a hydroxyl radical (●OH) quencher on the physical and optical properties of the DOM. Our results indicate that ozonation produces a large decrease ((≤ factor 50) in light absorption but also an increase (≤ factor 2) in Φf and a very important increase in Φ1O2 ((≤ factor 15) these decrease and increases being more important in the absence of a ●OH quencher. Following these investigations on the effects of ozone on the DOM, we will present some considerations into the photophysic that lead to the formation of reactive intermediates photoproduction from DOM. This study is an important step forward in explaining the effects of ozonation on the photophysical and photochemical properties of DOM and to a better understanding to the photophysics that govern to the production of reactive intermediates from DOM irradiation.
