The 2-buten-2-yl radical, CH3C=CHCH3, is an isomer of C4H7 that is an intermediate in the reactions of H + 1,3-butadiene and CH3 + propyne. These reactions play an important role in the combustion of many hydrocarbons. However, there is no recorded vibrational spectrum of this radical. This type of data could be beneficial in that it would provide a known spectral signature of the radical for future experiments, and could be useful in rate constant calculations. Pyrolysis of an appropriate precursor molecule is an established method of generating radicals. With this in mind, the goal of this project was to generate the 2-buten-2-yl radical through the pyrolysis of tiglic aldehyde, and then spectroscopically characterize it with FTIR. To do this, tiglic aldehyde was pyrolyzed in the gas phase at 1000-1200 K, and the products were deposited in a low temperature argon matrix. Vibrational spectra were then obtained using FTIR and analyzed to determine what products were formed.
