The development and refinement of reaction conditions for the synthesis of porphyrinoids with altered core structures is the focus of my research group comprised of undergraduate students. Our past and present work on stepwise and one-flask syntheses of meso-substituted phlorins exemplify our approach to studies of porphyrinoid synthetic methodology—the selection of porphyrinoid target compound, identification of promising synthetic routes, choice of parameters to systematically explore, and execution of the experiments. The opportunities and challenges of carrying out these studies in an undergraduate setting will also be presented.
