In this presentation, a model adopted by the University of Connecticut for improving student retention and outcome will be presented. The objective of the model is to select students from underrepresented groups who have potential for graduate school or medical school, and to use a combination of peer mentoring, faculty advising, and incorporation into research as tools to help them improve their application portfolio. The model will be outlined, and then successes and roadblocks discussed. The role of chemistry in the model will be highlighted.
