X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) is a very important method of analysis that is underutilized in several undergraduate curriculum. Our presentation will describe a simple project-based experiment for undergraduate chemistry students in which the students use layered materials such as alpha-zirconium phosphate, intercalate methylamine into the interlayer space. Students fingerprint their product. They also monitor the process of intercalation using XRPD,thus learning concepts such as the relationship of d<i>-spacing</i> and the θ angle in the Bragg’s equation.
