This school year, Ouachita Baptist University’s ACS chapter is working hard to share chemistry with others on campus and in our community. Through events during National Chemistry Week, we helped others experience the joy of science by hosting demonstrations on campus at lunch every day. To end the week with a bang, we hosted four demos on stage in our student center for an hour long. In addition, we were able to join forces with a neighboring ACS chapter at Henderson State University to host the Mole Day Program in a Box. We also partnered with the Astronomy Club at OBU to host a star-gazing event during National Chemistry Week. Additionally, we were able to expose kids to STEM by involving them in experiments at a local school. Over the summer, our chapter went to Arkansas Children’s Hospital to brighten the days of some of their in-patients by exploring science through art.<br/>In the spring semester, our chapter plans to incorporate green chemistry into our events by visiting a solar farm and discussing how we can improve current technology with chemistry. One example of this includes a solar-powered charging station for cell phones that a couple of our members created this summer, which is now located on our campus. We also plan to work with Girl Scout troops in Arkadelphia to help them earn their science badges, and hopefully we can incorporate Green Chemistry as well. In April, we will watch the ACS Webinar on BioPlastics, all of this in an effort to earn our green chemistry chapter status this year. Finally, our chapter will end the semester with one of our favorite activities- Miracle Berries. Miracle Berries make sour things sweet, so we will have an event where students can come and eat sour or bitter foods, like lemons. This event will be paired with a canned food drive.
