Chemicals that change shape when exposed to light are called photoresponsive molecules, and have been used for a range of applications including solar driven pumps, as well as on demand drug and pesticide release systems. One major advantage of using photoresponsive molecules to control reactions is that they are non-invasive, and non-toxic, thus eliminating chemical contamination. Our group is exploring new strategies to increase the versatility of photoresponsive molecules such as azobenzene, spiropyran, and donor-acceptor Stenhouse adducts (DASAs). In this work we will describe some initial studies using these photoresponsive molecules to produce mechanical work upon exposure to light irradiation.
