Metal–hydride catalysis offers an economical approach to rapidly building molecular complexity in organic synthesis. Several catalysts have been developed for promoting efficient hydrofunctionalization processes (e.g., hydrothiolation and hydrophosphinylation). Mechanistic studies have uncovered the non-innocent role of a counter-ion in the regiodivergent hydrofunctionalization of conjugated dienes. The synthesis of functionalized building blocks and natural products demonstrates the utility of these catalyst systems.
