Some third-world countries have been using guava leaves as a treatment for oral healthcare. The purpose of this study is to investigate guava and its effectiveness in the prevention of enamel breakdown and its antimicrobial properties.<br/>Hydroxyapatite was used to mimic the tooth enamel. When the hydroxyapatite is exposed to lactic acid, calcium and phosphate ions are released causing enamel to break down. The demineralization of hydroxyapatite was monitored by measuring calcium and phosphate levels in solutions with varying concentrations of lactic acid over time. These tests were performed with and without the presence of the water-soluble guava extracts to determine if guava extracts might interfere with the demineralization process. In addition, antimicrobial properties of guava were tested against Escherichia coli using agar diffusion. Results of demineralization and antimicrobial experiments will be discussed.
