A persisting problem in the education of students in the sciences is the lack of research opportunities. While some programs require undergraduate research for graduation, it is not a universal standard, and is often unobtainable for many students. Course based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) have been presented as a way to provide a chance for students to participate in real research projects as part of their courses, rather than outside of them. With the assistance of an NSF grant, three schools in Michigan, Central Michigan University, Delta College, and Saginaw Valley State University, successfully implemented research projects into multiple courses at their respective schools. Quantitative results of the impacts of the research on students and faculty have been discussed previously. This presentation discusses the qualitative data collected from these CURE experiences through interviews and surveys to make conclusions about the effect of their implementation.
