Dow Chemical is a large producer of ethylene oxide (EO), which is used as a building block for many of Dow’s downstream business units like Industrial Specialties and Performance Intermediates. More than half of Dow's ethylene oxide is used by other Dow businesses to produce materials for automotive components, paints, aircraft and runway deicers, coatings for safety glass, shatter-proof beverage bottles and textiles. Ethylene Glycols and Ethylene Oxides play a significant role in industry due to their physical properties and function as versatile intermediates in a wide range of applications. Dow uses EO for the production of monoethylene glycol and for the production of ethylene oxide derivatives such as EO based ethers, glycols, amines etc. Ethylene glycol is used in polyester fiber and polyethylene terephthalate resin production, antifreeze formulations and other film and industrial applications. Dow also is a provider of EO and MEG production technology and EO catalyst technology to current joint ventures and third party process and catalyst customers. The catalyst and process technology development has a successful history of 90+ years within Dow and heritage Union Carbide Inc. The catalyst and process development emphasis has been on improving the life-average selectivity and minimization of energy consumption to produce EO which requires the R&D teams to work at the cross sections of basic sciences and engineering, and will dicuss some recent improvements in the catalyst and process for EO production.
