Nickel-catalyzed chemical bond forming reactions have remarkable potential. There is an emerging importance of understanding the Ni(III) and the formally Ni(IV) redox states in synthetic chemistry, and the research discussed in this presentation is aimed at understanding at the molecular level the details of transformations that would help replace the use of precious metals like palladium in catalysis with nickel. Fluoroalkyl groups like the C4F8 fragment can serve as lynchpins for stabilizing high valent nickel so that new organic methodology can be enabled, including difficult N-N bond forming reactions. To enable such studies, perfluoroalkyl dizinc reagents have been developed which could transfer groups like the C4F8 fragment to nickel. The details of the reactivities of these dizinc reagents will be discussed. We will also present our efforts in designing other types of fluorinated ancillary ligands which we hope can enable a variety of new transformations at base metals like nickel.
