Fluorescent carbon nanoparticles are stable materials that offer wide application potential ranging from health to oil field applications. Various carbon dots have been reported, mainly synthesized from citric acid as a carbon source coupled with different amines as nitrogen dopant. Here we report the characterization of carbon nanoparticle prepared from just citric acid and study the effect of the environment on the fluorescent emission of carbon nanoparticles. Particularly, emission properties in a large number solvents with different polarity, temperature and salinity will be reported. Steady-state and time-correlated single-photon counting were employed to study the excited-state properties of the nanoparticles in various environments. In addition, fluorescent quenching of nanoparticles by electron accepting benzophenone reveals the additional information on emission centers. Lastly, the effect of the counter cation on the long-term stability of the fluorescent nanoparticles in an aqueous environment at high-temperature and salinity will be reported.
