Three dimensional (3D) supramolecules with giant cavities are extremely attractive due to their potential applications in catalysis, drug delivery, stabilization of (air)-sensitive molecules, ion-channels through cell membrane, etc. Pyrylium and pyridinium chemistry have been proved to be powerful in constructing ligands with high complexity. For instance, various two dimensional (2D) supramolecular Kandinsky circles with increasing number of layers (up to 4) have been built up in our previous works.<sup>1</sup> In this study, we aimed to enhance the supramolecular complexity by constructing 3D architecture, i.e., hexagonal prism, through self-assembly of a newly designed pentatopic terpyridine ligands with cadmium ion. The corresponding self-assembled metallo-supramolecular hexagonal prism was fully characterized by NMR techniques, electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), ion-mobility mass spectrometry (IM-MS), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). And this novel supramolecular prims shows good antibacterial activity through the interaction with cell bacterial membrane.
