Hydroamination is an attractive, atom-economic synthesis for the formation of C-N single bonds. Due to its limitations, such as the small substrate range only including electron-poor alkenes and alkynes in combination with mostly primary amines or the need of a catalyst, the synthetic value of this reaction often has been overlooked. We have explored the potential of the hydroamination reaction as a synthetic pathway to novel polymeric materials in an effort to produce new, highly functional polymers with potential applications as smart fibers. For this purpose, we have developed syntheses for different aminoalkylmaleimide, dimaleiimide and dimaleate monomers in straightforward, one-step syntheses. We are investigating a variety of copper(I) based catalysts in the hydroamination of these monomers. Currently investigated are also different reaction conditions. We have demonstrated that aminomaleiimides can be converted in refluxing ethanol within several days to give &gt; 90% conversion according to <sup>1</sup>H NMR spectroscopy (Scheme 1), hence a polymer with an average degree of polymerization (D<sub>P</sub>) = 10. We are presenting our recent progress with this new polymerization technique.
