Designing drug libraries is often a crucial first step in the development of pharmaceuticals, for a variety of intended uses, especially when testing for compounds that may exhibit anti-cancer properties. Synthesizing a wide array of structurally similar compounds allows for high-throughput screening of the drugs against various targets. Such a drug library was constructed utilizing the high efficiency of the copper(I) catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) and the expedient reaction times of microwave heating. Such reactions were conducted using a variety of organic azides and a fluorinated heteroaromatic ring possessing a terminal alkyne, as the biological activity of organic compounds containing fluorine can be augmented. Purification, when necessary, was performed via recrystallization. The compounds were characterized by IR and multi-nuclear NMR spectroscopy.
