To replace a commercial catalyst used in production of polyurethane (PU) elastomers, new catalysts were needed to meet the wide array of benefits exemplified by the incumbent catalyst technology – storage stability, long-pot life, rapid cure profile, and elastomer mechanical properties.  As new targets, metals heretofore unknown or minimally explored in PU catalysis were targeted to allow room for modular catalyst development and reactivity differentiation. Lewis acidic complexes of main group and transitionl metals were selected to provide a breadth of catalyst options, and a set of tridentate, monoanionic ligands was used to provide a consistent ligation environment. Initial catalyst discovery, subsequent developments in structure-activity behavior, and ultimate performance toward making PU elastomers will be shared as part of this presentation.
