β-Lactam antibiotics have been used for almost a century. Their misuse has led to outbreak of antibiotic resistance and created a serious global threat. β-Lactamases, one family of enzymes produced by bacteria, can destroy and hydrolyze β-lactam antibiotics and cause resistance. Carbapenem antibiotics were developed in the past decades and could tolerate hydrolysis by a wide range of β-lactamases. Although carbapenem antibiotics are known to be one of the "last resort antibiotics", a number of β-lactamases have been reported to hydrolyze carbapenem antibiotics and they are classified as carbapenemases.<br/><br/>Traditional way for carbapenemases detection may take several days, which is definitely too long for critically ill patients. Here, we present our work on a rational design of highly sensitive and selective fluorescent probes for rapid detection of carbapenemases. Our fluorescent probes can also differentiate carbapenemase-producing bacteria from non-carbapenemase-producing bacteria in clinical samples in a rapid manner.
