Lanthanides are critical materials that are frequently sought after for their optical and magnetic properties. Unlike transition metals, the coordination of ligands to lanthanide ions is primarily electrostatic in nature. There are several consequences of the electrostatic bonding of lanthanides. First, lanthanide complexes tend to have higher coordination numbers than transition metal complexes, with eight being the most common. One of the supposed drawbacks of conducting coordination chemistry in the electrostatic regime is the perceived lack of control over stoichiometry. Because of their optical and magnetic properties, lanthanide containing compounds are often sought as chemical vapor deposition precursors (CVD). Ideal CVD precursors should be monomeric and volatile complexes. We investigated the coordination reactions of lanthanide beta-diketonates (Ln(hfac)<sub>3</sub>) with different equivalents of 2,2'-bipyridine using both solution chemistry and mechanochemistry. We characterized the resulting complexes by FT-IR, NMR, DSC, and UV-Vis.
