Every year throughout the world, millions of people are infected with antibiotic resistant bacteria, with thousands dying as a result of the infections. Natural products have played key roles in modern medicine, advancing both the biological and synthetic development of antibiotics. Many of today’s antibiotics, stem from natural products due to their broad spectrum of biological activity; thus the discovery of novel natural products is always of interest for antibiotic production. Peptide natural products have been seen as candidates for the development of new antibiotics due to recent technological achievements in the isolation and extraction, which has discovered previously unseen natural products from soil-based bacteria. Peptide based drugs have played key roles in the realm of antibiotic production such as gramicidins and bacitrancins and continue to provide novel modes of attack, counteracting many of today’s antimicrobial resistant bacterial strains. The main focus of this research is to examine the biological activity of peptide analogues fragments of a macrocyclic peptide in order to explore the scope and determine the amino acids necessary to retain biological activity.
