Owing to their high sensitivity and synthetic tunability, small molecule fluorophores serve as exceptional platforms for the selective detection and imaging of biological and environmental analytes. These chemical probes often employ a recognition or reaction-based strategy that alters photoinduced electron transfer (PET) efficiency of an electronically orthogonal moiety with the excited chromophore. Unfortunately, most of these fluorescent tools suffer from a largely empirical design approach, resulting in long synthetic efforts to afford compounds with effective photophysical responses. A systematic study of electron donor structure and HOMO energy on coumarin optical properties has been undertaken in an effort to provide further predictive capability toward PET-based sensor design. Application of these efforts to the detection of triazine-based pesticides with PET-based coumarin probes is presented.
