Hydration and hydroboration reactions are staples for any organic course.  Seldom however, are those reactions run in the laboratory.  Even when they are, the unsaturated starting material is typically an alkene.  The goal of this study is to establish conditions where half the class reacts a terminal alkyne to perform a hydration reaction and the other half a hydroboration.  After tautomerization of the intermediate vinyl alcohol, the students using hydration or hydroboration will obtain a ketone or aldehyde, respectively.  This functional group difference can be analyzed by a simple IR or more complex methods.
