In the early 1990’s, ordered mesoporous materials based surfactant templated approaches were first reported in the literature. Subsequently, a new class of separation materials, called self-assembled monolayers on mesoporous supports (SAMMS), was developed. This class of materials showed exceptionally capacity and selectivity for removing toxic metals from polluted water. In the last two decades, similar functionalized mesoporous materials have been explored for separation, drug and protein delivery, cancer immunotherapy, energy storage, and large scale soil remediation. This paper will review the design, synthesis and applications of functionalized mesoporous materials, and their future directions for practical applications.
