There are many toxic ions including heavy metals and effective removal of such toxic ion is one of the challenges of environmental scientists and engineers. However, the concentration of those toxic ions is usually very low while concentration of non-toxic ions is relatively high. Therefore selective removal of target ion is a preferred technology for cost effective treatment of heavy metal contaminated water and wastewater. A novel Cd(II) imprinted polymer adsorbent was synthesized by surface imprinting technique using Cd ion as template and it is tested for the selective removal of Cd2+ from water. Selectivity was obtained against competing ions such as Mg2+, Ca2+, K+ and Na+. The selectivity was very higher comparing with common adsorbents such as zeolite and activated carbon.
