The Chemistry and Biochemistry Program at our University requires an undergraduate research experience for all our majors.  Partially in response to a university-wide initiative to transition to an integrative clusters approach, which is designed to minimize traditional discipline-based boundaries, we have made significant changes to the undergraduate research curriculum.  The emphasis on collaborative, interdisciplinary projects has challenged the faculty to explore potential research projects, aspects of which may be outside their area of expertise.  Participation in the NSF-sponsored cCWCS program by several of our faculty has had a significant impact on this enterprise.  I will specifically address how my participation in the cCWCS workshop “Mitochondrial Biochemistry, Genetics, and Molecular Biology” led to development of a more inclusive research program that has increased student interest and has the potential to evolve into a model interdisciplinary cluster project.   <br/>
