This talk will summarize our group's recent efforts to develop chemical methods for controlling the stereochemical outcome of glycosylation reactions. These approaches do not rely on directing groups to control selectivity. Instead, the diastereochemical outcomes of the reactions are controlled entirely by the glycosylation promoters. Both deoxy sugars and more traditional donors are competent substrates for these reactions. Mechanistic studies to understand the basis of selectivity in these reactions as well as the scope and limitations of the chemistry will be discussed. The applications of this chemistry to complex oligosaccharide synthesis will also be highlighted.
