The rapid kinetics of Fenton and solar-Fenton process was investigated and modeled. Common degradation processes of organic pollutants by Fenton's reagent include a rapid first stage and a far slower second stage. The first stage often accounts for a large fraction of pollutant decomposition, but it hasn't been well monitored or studied because of its rather short time. In this study, a continuous monitoring device was used to monitor the two-stage degradation of malachite green (MG) by Fenton and solar-Fenton process. The rapid first stage of the degradation was kinetically investigated and mathematically modeled using the software COPASI. The kinetic model was set up using 14 chemical species and 20 elementary chemical reactions, which was tested by the experimental data acquired at widely varying levels of MG, Fe2+ and H2O2. Under the conditions employed in this study, hydroxyl radical was the only species responsible for the degradation of MG. Propagation and termination reactions involving organic radicals were assumed to be of little importance and were not incorporated in the model. The bimolecular rate constant for the reaction between MG and hydroxyl radical was determined by the competitive kinetics method. The validity of the model was evaluated by the correlation coefficient (r2) between the experimental and predicted data of MG degradation and Fe2+ consumption. All of the correlation coefficients are above 0.95, indicating good performance of the kinetic model. This model can help improve mechanistic understanding on the rapid kinetics of Fenton process, and optimize the reaction time and input dosages of Fenton's reagent.
