(S)-Dihydroresorcylide was isolated in 2008 by Poling. This twelve-member macrocycle was extracted from maize and found to have phytotoxic activity. The compound was synthesized in 2013 by Guo and coworkers which utilized carbonylation and ring closing metathesis to generate the desired lactone. However, the enantiomer has yet to be synthesized. The purpose of this research was to produce the (R) product via a convergent process with Pd enolate formation being the staple to complete the ring closure. Synthetic strategies to generate the desired macrocyclic lactone will be discussed.
