The deterioration of steel infrastructures due to corrosion and fouling is a major challenge for various industries, especially the oil and gas industries. Among the various known mitigation approaches, the use of protective coatings is still the most generic method for mitigating these metal-loss causing problems. In particular, multifunctional hybrid sol-gel coatings are a very promising alternative to the currently used commercial toxic anticorrosion/antifouling coatings. This study presents our obtained successful results on the synthesis, functionalization, and application of novel hybrid sol-gel polymeric coatings for mild steel substrate. Lab and field testing revealed that the developed coatings have interesting anticorrosion and antifouling properties on steel surface comparing to a commercial coating.
