Yamuna is the largest tributary of Ganga River system. The stretch of the river between, Mathura, Agra and Etawah is particularly polluted. The observed water quality of river Yamuna at these two cities is poor, with the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) ranging from 10-20 mg/L and 6-12 mg/L respectively. Trihalomethanes (THMs) are the class of chlorination disinfection byproducts (DBPs) that are formed after reaction of chlorine with natural organic matter (NOM). Although THMs are among the regulated group of DBPs but its identification and regulation in developing part of the world is nonexistent. This study is first case study of the situation in India. NOM act as a precursor to THM therefore charactersing NOM will help in developing a relation between NOM characteristics and THM formation. NOM is ubiquitous in the aquatic environment leading to various water quality issues in drinking water treatment sector. In this study, THMs have been identified in Northern part of the country i.e. Agra and Mathura region covering one stretch of river Yamuna. Also, an attempt has been made to characterize the NOM with respect to THM formation. The characteristics of NOM were found to be geographically and seasonally dependent. NOM was found to be mixture of hydrophobic and hydrophilic groups.
