Over 50 million tons of industrial lignin has been produced in pulping industry annually all over the world. Industrial lignin has a low recoverability rate, which is always burned and discharged along with waste water. Lignosulfonate, as an important part of industrial lignin, has a lot of activity function groups with great application potential. Therefore, it is significant to study how to convert the rich lignosulfonate resource into high-valued chemicals and materials. In this study, a new, simple one-step approach has been developed to fabricate magnetic lignosulfonate-based microspheres with high performance in wastewater treatment. The obtained magnetic lignosulfonate-based microspheres were characterized by TEM, SEM, FTIR, XRD, VSM. The results showed that the microspheres had a good magnetic behavior in an applied magnetic field. The saturation magnetization intensity of microspheres was up to 43.9 emu/g. The adsorption capacity results showed that the microspheres exhibited an excellent adsorption property for Rhodamine B (26.18 mg/g), which is better than other relevant researches. Simultaneously, the adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherm experiments indicated that the data were agreed well with the pseudo-second -order and Langmuir model, respectively. Hence, the magnetic lignosulfonate-based microspheres is a promising material as a highly adsorptive and recyclable adsorbent for the applications in the wastewater treatment.
