Starting in 2012, the POGIL-PCL (POGIL for the Physical Chemistry Laboratory) project has built a community of over 130 physical chemistry lab course instructors who are involved in the development and implementation of experiments for this course. The community has made substantial progress on improving student learning in the physical chemistry laboratory (PCL) course through writing and implementing inquiry experiments and providing faculty development opportunities for physical chemistry instructors who are often isolated at their institutions. We present here the current status of the POGIL-PCL project and the prospects through 2021. We describe the current set of experiments available for adoption and those under current development, all of which have been developed using POGIL principles that emphasize modeling of both macroscopic and microscopic chemical phenomena, student design and refinement of experimental protocols, and data pooling to assist in uncovering general physical chemistry principles. We also summarize the development and implementation of a workshop model that creates and supports a community of experiment authors and adopters. The planning and delivery of these workshops include efforts to target current graduate students and postdocs who are the next generation of chemistry faculty. Our current work also includes two research initiatives: the characterization of student learning outcomes in this upper-level laboratory-based course and the description using the lens of social network analysis how research-based teaching practices diffuse into physical chemistry classroom and laboratory courses.
