Layered and 2D materials provide the opportunity to investigate the behavior of fluids under nanoconfinement. Our recent work has focused on the effect of this confinement and the presence of structural water in layered transition metal oxides particularly during electrochemical ion intercalation. In this presentation, I will describe the electrochemical behavior of a model transition metal oxide system, WO3●nH2O. We investigated the structure, mechanics, and water dynamics in this material system using a suite of in situ and operando techniques, including solid-state proton NMR, operando AFM, and neutron scattering. The results indicate that structural water in a crystalline hydrate such as WO3●2H2O does not have translational motion, and that it helps to minimize the mechanical deformation of the material during ion intercalation.
