The use of renewable carbon (lignocellulosic and not edible land biomass, organic wastes), anthropogenic carbon dioxide, and aquatic biomass is the pillar of the circular economy. The above sources can be considered for the production of platform molecules useful for the synthesis of chemicals, pharmaceuticals and cosmetic products, monomers for polymers, and fuels representing the base of the development of the Bioeconomy and the Bio-Based-Industry-BBI. These primary sources are structurally different from oil and require the development of new catalysts and new synthetic strategies that allow the transition from a feed consisting essentially of hydrocarbons to one made of carbohydrates and/or lipids. In many cases, C-OH chemistry replaces the C-H chemistry, with new paradigms for catalysts and water removal. The development of new catalytic strategies and new catalytic materials for the conversion of not-edible or aquatic biomass, organic waste, CO2 will be presented. The importance of the integration of catalysis and biocatalysis will be also discussed.
