N-heterolytic carbene (NHC) complexes and related compounds are useful ligands for metal complexes utilized in oxidation chemistry. During the recent year an increasing number of highly active transition metal NHC compounds have been synthesized and applied in oxidation chemistry. Not only the usual “model substrates” but also compounds of industrial interest have been examined as substrates. Catalyst synthesis, characterization and modification are described as well as a variety of applications that shed light of both advantages and weaknesses of these novel catalyst, that also are occasionally labelled “bio-inspired”.
