<br/>In this presentation we will discuss oligomerization of C2-C6 olefins using carbon supported cobalt oxide catalysts. The catalyst was prepared by impregnation of different types of carbons followed by a heating step in an inert gas.  The activity of the catalyst increases with a decreasing pretreatment temperature in an inert atmosphere. In-situ TEM shows how the cobalt particle form during the pre-treatment.  The cobalt oxide can oligomerize ethylene, propylene, 1-butene and 1-hexene into linear oligomers by a  Cossee-Arlman.  More  than 72.5% of the dimers produced from 1-butene and 1-hexene are internal linear olefins, while the dimer products from propylene oligomerization are 47.0% linear including 5.9% 1-hexene. Ethylene had the highest oligomerization activity with 56.1–87.0% 1-butene selectivity. The selectivity to linear alpha olefins decreases with an increasing oligomer chain length during ethylene oligomerization. A kinetic model was built for ethylene oligomerization.  The oligomers formed from ethylene conversion follow a Schulz-Flory distribution. The activity for oligomerizing internal olefins was more than an order of magnitude lower than oligomerizing terminal olefins. In-situ XANES and in-situ Raman spectroscopy studies suggest that a Co3+ phase is the active catalytic phase.  The Co3+ phase reduces (as observed by XRD and TGA analysis) as the pretreatment temperature is increased.<br/>
