We have carried out a systematic study of a one-pot procedure for the dialkylation of imines (R = cyclohexyl) and hydrazones (R = NMe<sub>2</sub>) of cyclopentanone, cyclohexanone and cycloheptanone that involves sequential deprotonation, alkylation, deprotonation, alkylation and hydrolysis. We have looked at a variety of conditions for carrying out the hydrolysis step and determined that the dialkylation of the hydrazones have several advantages over the dialkylation of the cyclohexyl imines. We have also completed our study of the equilibrium ratios of the dialkylated cycloalkanones under basic conditions.
