Many main group chemists have used N-heterocyclic carbenes and cyclic alkyl amino carbenes for the synthesis of novel molecules. Nearly a decade ago, a new class of ligands, coined as carbodicarbenes (CDC), containing two lone pairs of electrons localized on the central carbon atom were synthetically realized. Because of their electronic nature, CDCs are incredibly nucleophilic with respect to NHCs and CAACs, and thus have been shown to stabilize highly electrophilic, low-coordinate complexes. This presentation will cover the first examples of alkaline earth metal CDC complexes. This work features C−H bond activation mediated by a beryllium center, which lead to the formation of a beryllium 5-membered metallocycle containing a terminal, tunable, anionic moiety. Interestingly, the precursor to these metallocycles contains an interesting steric effect that may be responsible for the cyclization.
