L-arginine is a sports supplement commonly used by athletes to enhance performance and endurance. L-arginine ethyl ester (LAEE) is a derivative of L-arginine taken with claims that the ester form has a greater efficacy, leading to lower doses required. LAEE hydrolyses into L-arginine and ethanol under various physiological conditions. The hydrolysis of LAEE was measured using NMR, and was found to be dependent upon pH, temperature, and buffer concentration. This presentation reports the effects of the buffer concentration and temperature on the rate of hydrolysis.
