In an effort to increase the authenticity of the student laboratory experience, a general, organic and biochemistry (GOB) course was redesigned to use electronic laboratory notebooks (ELNs) to mimic the use of electronic health records (EHRs) pervasive in the health care industry. The literature in GOB coursework emphasizes the need for true authentic experiences to motivate future health professionals, which led the chemistry faculty to observe that they do not have the expertise necessary to validate the authenticity of the experiences as designed. Therefore, a panel of nurses and nursing educators were solicited and asked to validate the authenticity of the experiences using their expertise. The panel was in complete consensus in support of the move to ELNs to create a more authentic experience including use of file-uploads, scaffolded note-taking, and photo documentation using smart phones. The redesign of the course, the evaluation by the panel, and implications for further improvement will be presented.
