The leaves of Adinandra nitida, named as Shiya tea, has been used as an herbal tea in south China for a long time due to its good flavor and health benefits (e.g. reducing blood pressure and anti-inflammation etc.). The crude extracts of Shiya tea were first found to inhibit differentiation of 3T3-L1 preadipocytes and lipid accumulation. In this study, bioactivity-guided isolation and identification has been conducted using 3T3-L1 preadipocytes and spectroscopic methods (1D, 2D NMR, and HR-ESI-MS). The results demonstrated that a triterpenoid reduced intracellular lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 adipocytes in a dose-dependent manner without causing cytotoxicity. The structure-activity relationship has also been discussed.
