Ionic cocrystals are cocrystals between organic molecules and inorganic salt coformers. Cocrystals of pharmaceuticals are of interest to help control polymorph formation and potentially improve stability and other physical properties. We are exploring the preparation of ionic cocrystals of simple drug-like molecules with a variety of zinc(II) salts. We have synthesized a 2:1 benzamide / zinc(II)chloride cocrystal via slow evaporation and analyzed it using powder X-ray, single crystal X-ray, and differential scanning calorimetry. The cocrystal crystallizes in the P2<sub>1</sub>/n space group and has a melting point of over 300°C. A second cocrystal has been prepared as a 1:1 beta-alanine / zinc(II)chloride compound that crystallizes in the P1 space group and forms linear carboxylate-linked chains in the solid state.
