Since the introduction of click chemistry by K. B. Sharpless in 2001, click chemistry presents an exciting opportunity for undergraduate students to work at the forefront of modern organic synthesis. Click chemistry is defined as a fast, modular, process-driven approach and orthogonal synthetic platform for formation of new carbon–heteroatom bonds. The emphasis of this work is centered on the rapidly expanding area of click chemistry-mediated synthesis of functional ionic liquids<i> via</i> SuFEx and thiol–X (ene and yne) reactions while offering some thoughts on emerging challenges and opportunities of undergradute chemistry reserach. Click chemistry offers many opportunities for matrials synsthsis, and introduces intriguing perspectives on efficient formation of tailored ionic liquids as an important class of soft materials.
